Shivapuri day hike is the longest day hike around the Kathmandu valley. The hiking trail lies in the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. Shivapuri day hike is a perfect way of having a different experience of nature and being free from the busy schedule in the town.
Shivapuri day hike begins from Budanilakantha, which is about a 12 km drive north of the main city area- Thamel. Getting an entry permit from the National park checkpoint, you begin to hike. There is a monastery on the way and after passing it, the isolated hiking begins. The hiking trail is nicely made inside the forest. The forest is dotted by the rhododendron, pine and oak forest. Only in one-two place, there are slightly open meadows. You feel the real wilderness there. The monkeys look at you from the tree. Walking for about 3 hours, you reach the Bagdwar, which is the source of the Bagmati River. Some hermits have settled down on the open meadow. After another half an hour of walks up and up, you reach the top of the Shivapuri peak (2730 meters). Sometimes, we can see snow there. It is a piece of paradise. The Himalayan views of Langtang and Ganesh Himal can be explored. Descending about a couple of hours, you conclude the hike at Budanilakatha and drive to your hotel.
