About 10-Day Everest Base Camp Short Trek

The 10-Day Everest Base Camp Short Trek is the best option for those who lack time for the regular itinerary. However, we suggest you travel with some extra days for this trip because the weather in Lukla may be affected by bad weather, which can sometimes prevent flights before or after the trek.

You must have visited high altitudes before attempting this shorter-format trek to Everest Base Camp to be protected from high-altitude sickness, as the itinerary is a rapid one without altitude-acclimatization rest days. However, you will have one altitude practice day from Namche Bazaar on the third day. You hike up to Hotel Everest View and walk to Kyangjuma to stay, which is a short and acclimatization practice.

The walking journey of a short trek to Everest Base Camp for 10 days begins from Lukla after flying in from Kathmandu or Ramechhap (Manthali) towards Phakding on the first day. After spending the first night in Phakding, you trek to Namche Bazaar on the second day, and then hike to Hotel Everest View for altitude practice and walk down to Kyanjuma on the third day. You trek to Somare on the fourth day, to Lobuche on the fifth day, to Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp on the sixth day, while you trek upwards.

You will trek down for three days from Gorak Shep after the Kal Patthar hike to Pheriche, Namche Bazaar, and Lukla, and then fly out to Kathmandu or Ramechhap and drive.

Why 10-Day Everest Base Camp Short Trek?

A 10-day Everest Base Camp short trek is designed for adventurous trekkers who do not have enough time to complete a regular itinerary offered by most trekking agencies in Nepal. How to Prepare for the 10-Day Everest Base Camp?

Everest Base Camp is a moderate to strenuous trek according to the trekker's stamina and ability. You must walk long trekking camps, especially on the second day, from Phakding to Namche Bazaar, Lobuche to Everest Base Camp via Gorakshep, Gorak Shep to Somare, including Kala Patthar, Somare to Namche Bazaar, and Namche to Lukla on the last day.

You need to be ready for the long walking camps without many altitude practice days on your way up to the base camp. Also, you must be aware of altitude sickness in the high elevations on this quick trek to Everest Base Camp. So, you must have good preparation before you choose a 10-day short trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal.

The longest walking day during the short 10-day trek to Everest Base Camp is on the sixth day from Lobuche to Everest Base Camp via Gorakshep and return to Gorak Shep for the night. It takes a minimum of 7 to 9 hours, so we recommend some hiking practices at home before you attempt this quickest itinerary.

Additionally, we recommend running for a few kilometers every day, covering your mouth and nose to help mitigate low oxygen levels when you are exhausted from running. You can also do indoor gym exercise for leg and cardio for a few months before going on the short trek to Everest Base Camp. You must carry a daypack with warm clothes for the day, day snacks, water, and rain gear while walking. Therefore, we suggest practicing carrying a backpack while hiking.

Altitude matters in the mountains, so we advise you to trek to three thousand meters above sea level anywhere in the Himalayas before you plan a trek to Everest Base Camp for 10 days.

Quickest Everest Base Camp Itinerary for 10 Days: Can Everyone Do It?

We do not recommend this quickest itinerary for everyone. Only usual hikers, who have already been to three thousand meters in the mountain regions, can do it. However, we recommend our regular Everest Base Camp plan for all. However, those who are ready for a challenge and want to make it adventurous can try this package.

The 10-day itinerary has almost no rest day for altitude acclimatization. Still, we have included an easy preparation package for you in this package. Most of the Everest Base Camp trekkers spend two nights in Namche Bazaar on their way up and hike to the Hotel Everest View on the third day. We have prepared similar altitude practices for you, including hiking and staying near Namche Bazaar, to keep you safe and ensure a successful trip within this short itinerary.

Useful Info

What Are the Challenges of the 10-Day Everest Base Camp Short Trek?

Completing the adventurous trek to Everest Base Camp in 10 days is the main challenge itself, as it involves taking the risk of altitude-related problems for the trekkers. You must walk longer hours to complete the two-week itinerary in 10 days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu, which raises the issue of altitude sickness if you have not been over four thousand meters in any Himalayas before and if you are not a regular hiker.

Cold temperatures are also a factor that makes it difficult for trekkers in the Everest Himalayas; therefore, we suggest bringing sufficient and high-quality trekking gear to trek to Everest Base Camp. There will be cold wind in the high altitudes, which can cause headaches and Khumbu Cough. We highly recommend covering your ears and staying protected from the cold air in the mountains.

Crowd trail with trekkers, porters, mules, and Jokpe (a hybrid of cow and yak) to the Everest Base Camp makes it difficult for the trek. You have to wait in narrow areas to pass the other and be in a hurry to cross risky and narrow areas in some places while walking on the Everest Trail during the high trekking season. The walking trail will be dusty in some areas because of the crowd, so you must cover your nose and mouth to be protected from dust and not get flue in the mountain.

Due to the many people in the guesthouses, you may not have enough space near the fire heating in dining because many people like to sit around the fire hearer to avoid cold in the higher regions on Everest Route. Suppose you are traveling individually without hiring a guide. In that case, it won't be easy to get accommodation in some places during your short trek to Everest Base Camp.

The weather in the mountains is unpredictable. You must fly to Lukla to start the trek, which is often affected by the weather for the flight. We suggest not to plan the trek with a limited time, so always keep some spare days. The most important thing is that you must be ready to pay extra for a helicopter if the regular flight has been canceled. There is a weight limitation for the flight, which allows 15kg, including hand luggage. Therefore, you will need to pay an additional fee if your equipment exceeds 15 kilograms in weight.

When is the Best Time for a Short Everest Base Camp 10-Day Trek?

October to May is the best time for a 10-day Everest Base Camp short trek. However, the temperature in the mountain regions of Nepal from December to February will be freezing. You will have crystal mountain views and clear blue skies in November and December. Additionally, there are no obstacles to the Lukla Flight at this time.

September is also considered a peak tourism season in Nepal, as autumn begins in this month. Still, there will be some rainy days in September, which makes it challenging to fly to Lukla to start the trek.

Stay Safe During the Trek

Trekking to the mountain and Everest region is not always a favorable situation for everyone. There can be some obstacles while trekking. So, you must be careful while walking towards Everest Base Camp and back until Lukla.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can be a significant problem because you are doing this adventure trek rapidly. We suggest strolling. However, you feel comfortable walking with ease and breathing easily. It is better to take many short breaks while walking on an ascending trail and keep drinking water. If you experience early symptoms, consult with your guide and decide to descend to a lower elevation as soon as possible.

Be careful with porters, mules, and Jopke! You meet lots of porters and animals carrying loads along the way to Everest Base Camp. We suggest standing in a safe place when you encounter them, as the load can push you inadvertently.

If the wild animals and yak are grazing above the walking trail, do not stand straight below them to take pictures and watch them. Always stand at an angle because the stones may drop down from their movement.

Is it possible to complete the Everest Base Camp trek in 10 days?

Yes! It is possible, but you must be a regular hiker who has often visited elevations over 3,000 meters in the Himalayas. You can also do this short itinerary after doing physical muscle and cardio exercises indoors, creating high atmospheric pressure in the room.

What are the options if Lukla's Flight has been canceled?

Lukla Flights might have been canceled frequently due to unfavorable weather conditions, making it challenging to embark on a 10-day short trek to Everest Base Camp. The best option to reach Lukla from Kathmandu, which is faster, is to take a helicopter for an extra cost. The helicopter flight cost depends on the type of flight (sharing, private), as well as current and upcoming weather conditions.

You can also drive to Surke, which is below Lukla. But, the driving road is long, which takes two extra days one way, and the road is too rough.
